Paws of Comfort Program

Q & A

Where do the dogs go when they enter your program?

After a dog or puppy is evaluated it will go to a foster home where its temperament will be evaluated and receive basic obedience training. Once we know the dog better their placement will be determined.

ESA must be:

•Calm: They shouldn't be easily agitated, shy, or overly excitable

•Social: They should be friendly with people and other dogs

•Patient: They should be tolerant of clumsy petting and unpredictable behaviors

•Obedient: They should know basic commands and cues

•Non-aggressive: They shouldn't bark too much or bite or jump on people

•Intuitive: They should be able to sense emotional needs

If we feel the dog is a candidate for Service Dog Training the dog will be evaluated at an outside Service Dog Agency. Usually it will take a week or so to determine if the dog has the proper temperament to continue an extensive training program. If the dog does not qualify, he/she is returned to us. If it does, the dog will be transferred to the servie dog agency and  into an intensive training program. Most dogs do not make the cut. We have only had one dog in the last few years accepted into the service dog program.

What happens to the dogs that do not have the temperament to be an ESA or Service Dog?

They will be transferred to our rescue partner . and go into a foster home until adopted to a suitable home.

Are you a Non-Profit Organization?

No, we are not, however we work closely with non-profit groups for assistance in fostering and placement. However no one in our organization gets a salary. We do this because we love animals.

What vetting do the dogs receive?

All dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped at a minimum

Do you screen applicants for ESD’s and Adopters?

Yes, we have an application that everyone fills out. Not everyone qualifies. We may review several applications for the best fit. We match the dog to the lifestyle of the applicant.

Most dogs will require a fenced in yard, someone who has the time to be a companion to the

dog, we do not adopt to people who will crate a dog and leave for 8 hrs. a day to go to work.

We require a meet and greet with all family members and all pets in the home, and we often

do home visits. We do a background check on all applicants and request vet records of

previous and current dogs.

Do you have a physical location?

     No, we use foster homes

Do you accept all dogs into the program?

We only accept dogs with a good temperament. They must be friendly and somewhat

socialized.

What areas do you serve?

We try to stay within Indiana unless we have someone willing to transport to us.

Do you charge for your service?

We do not charge for our service; however, we do charge adoption fees to cover the costs

we have in the dog, the organizations that we work with do as well. For instance if the dog is

not suited as an ESA and will be adopted as a pet, the rescue organization will charge an

adoption fee. Adoption fees for ESA or Pets range from $395- $595. If the dog qualifies as a

Service Dog, which are a very small percent then the Service Animal Group will charge their

own adoption fee and place the dog.

Where can we see your dogs?

We do not post our dogs online because we have a wait list of approved applicants. Most

of our dogs are adopted soon after they are vetted.
